Dear Finnish Friends,

I am a great lover of Finnish music since ages and have a large collection of Finnish albums, mostly Jazz & Prog (over 1000 of them) - probably one of the largest outside Finland.

I invite you to visit my Jazzis Web Shop - a great source of Prog on the web - see for yourselves. Of course there is Wigwam, Pekka and many othe Finns there as well!

Great shop, good service, thank you Adam!

Thank you for the worm welcome!

Several people from this forum already registered or ordered from our Web Shop in less then 24 hours - thank you for your support! :)

If I could only understand what the buttons say?! It might be Finnish but it is Chinese to me :D

If you promise not to pay any taxes, I can consider ordering something. I really don't want to support the government of Israel by giving them money to buy more weapons.

And I thought all is ideal here?

Why can't we keep politics out of Art? If you and me love that same music, does it matter what religion, gender, nationality or color of skin we are?

I am not responsible for my Govermet's doing, nor its spokesman. I do however believe that we'll find a peacfull solution to the conflict eventually. In the meantime both sides are suffering. I'm sure you can understand that.

I didn't say anything about religion, gender, nationality or color of skin and I totally agree with you on that.
And yes, we probably should keep politics out of this conversation. We can talk about politics somewhere else, like in the forums "Complete waste of time" or "Varaventtiili".
I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings, I didn't mean that.

OK no problem - no harm done. :)

I'm pretty used by now to getting criticized for things I'm not responsible for. It's just not right to judge People by their Nationality - not all Israelis are the same, as surely not all Finns are - it would be terribly boring I suppose if they were. I can respect other People's political views even if I completely disagree with them and try not to mix politics and music!

My sympathy and love for Finnish People and Music is umsheakable! :D

Stay well and a (late) Happy New Year!

I don't want to support the government of USA. Any ideas how that might be accomplished in practice? First we need to get Steve from Cuneiform to emigrate to Europe, so I can keep buying whatever he puts out.

    Dear Viukkis

I'm afraid you've got some mixed-up ideas about economy and politics and Prog. May I refer you to my regular column at Prognosis called "Right Between the Eyes" at the following address:

    http://www.silverdb.com

My last article entitled "Prog and the Big Buck$" will explain to you how wrong you are about this issue. Cuniform have great releases and if you are not buying them it's your loss primarily!

BTW if you don't want to buy Cuniform from USA you can buy them form me :D

    Hi Esa,

Good to see you on your home turf!
    Happy New Year!

    Doc.B.D kirjoitti noin 22 vuotta sitten+/- saldo : 0

ADAM, any idea how many copies worldwide makes an album profitable? Zappa.com had some trouble getting 5000 people to preorder OZ. Part of it because Zappa.com is unreliable. But generally, how many copies does, say, a Pohjola CD sell world wide?

    jazzis kirjoitti noin 22 vuotta sitten+/- saldo : 0
    Dear Esa,

There is really no simple answer to this, it all depends how much it costs to make the album in the first place.

    Here are some rough estimates:

For a self-produced album by a unknown band the production costs would be around 10,000 Euro (everything, i.e studion time, mixing, mastering, cover design and pressing of 2,000 CDs). So if they sell 2,000 copies they break even - BUT they NEVER manage to sell 2,000 copies!

For an established band (IQ, Pendragon) the cost will grow to about 30,000 - 50,000 Euro so they need to sell 10,000 albums - which sometimes they do but often don't.

For a really expensive production you need 100,000 Euro and that means at least 20,000 sales - in Prog that NEVER happens.

So as you see this is a no-win situation - the only way to survive is to tour, get royalties, do tv, etc. - i.e. work HARD and everything together you can make a living - getting rich - no way.

Of course if you live in Finland - you get Goverment SUPPORT for making music - this helps a lot Llike L--USEC and other funds.

As to Pekka Pohjola - I don't think his albums on his own label sell very much outside Finland - very few people (SADLY) know about him. I'd estimate may be a 1,000 - at the most, but I might be mistaken? His label could give you some answers (perhaps?)

BTW I wish I could understand all the comments to this thread - will have to learn Finnish soon :D

And of course Prog needs all the support it can get! Me included ;)\n[Muokattu 4/1/2003 / jazzis]

On another board we had a question about a band that took up a collection, worldwide, so they could tour, from England, mainly to the US: We could not remember the name of the band.

I was fortunate enough to see Varttinä on one of their US tours, as we are nowhere near places like Minnesota, where there is strong Scandinavian support, and even a label, Northside.

    jazzis kirjoitti noin 22 vuotta sitten+/- saldo : 0
Yea, life is definitely NOT easy! :(

From your post I gather you live in the US? Missing home :D

The US is so big that most things do happen on a regional scale. Not many Finns tour, not even the Jazz guys unfortunately. Quite a lot of Finnish guys (and girls) went to Berkeley school of music, even Heiiki Sarmanto was one of the first non-Americans to attend the school a long time ago. But playing Jazz in the US by non-US players - that's a bitch! Most Americans think that nobody can play music (especially jazz) but Americans :o Some Finns though made it quite well in NY I think - Suonosari - the drummer and a few more. Also Koivistoinen tour a bit outside Finland.

I saw some Finns playing in Poland, when Stanko played with Vessala, he was often in Poland. A Finnish accordion player visited Israel last yera for one of our festivals.

Pekka Pohjola did probably the most playing outside Finland when he toured with Oldfield.

    EsaJii kirjoitti noin 22 vuotta sitten+/- saldo : 0
The Finnish state sponsors some tours, or supports in part. They tend to be NY, Chicago and Los Angeles. Perhaps Austin, Texas, if they attend the big festival for new bands there.

We are 600 miles from Chicago. I never drove more than 60 miles to a concert...

Got my CD's today. In fact, they already arrived on Friday but the post office was already closed when I got home from work. That was certainly quick - on the other hand the Hammill CD's I ordered from CDON before Christmas still haven't showed up. No problems with the customs either! This will certainly not be the last time I order from Jazzis.

One complaint though: I'm somewhat uneasy with the fact that my credit card information is stored on the site and is protected only with a password of at most six characters. Seems a bit insecure to me.

    jazzis kirjoitti noin 22 vuotta sitten+/- saldo : 0
Thank you so much for your comments - always good to hear from a satisfied customer! ;)

As to the security paranoia! No problem there - please click on the SSL logo which will explain the "secure site" technology to you - nothing to worry about - nobody but you can see the info about your credit card - the information is encrypted and only you can see it.

To see it you must log on with your customer ID and then your password is checked twice! Also if you leave your screen alone for 15 minutes the site will log off automatically! You won't find better security on the Web I'm sure.

We have a few thousand customers and never (phui,,,phui,,,) had any problems so far with their security. In fact I'm more afaraid of bogus cc numbers and us being cheated by customers - so much cc crime these days! But your secrets are safe with us! :)

Of course I wouldn't recommend leaving the PASSWORD stuck on your monitor as a remider! :D There is only so much we can do.

    Greetings!
